ROOM short film

Finally after 3 mths of ~~hard~~work, I finished this short 3D animation.

ROOM is the story about 2 guys struggling for space in a house.

Production time is 3 1/2 months (Feb - June 2009), from concept toward compositing. Music and sound fx are done by Markus Kellow, really nice guy to work with.

This is just a teaser poster. It hasn't been submitted, I'm sorry I'm unable to show it publicly yet.

I hope to be able to show more stuff after submission.

JPEG compression control in Maya

By default, the JPEG files that render out of Maya use a %75 quality setting.

There is a way to increase the quality.

You will need to add an environment variable to your Maya.env file.

AW_JPEG_Q_FACTOR = 100;

Where 100 is the quality percentage.

Blend shape attach head to the body

Usually we duplicate the entire body mesh to create a blend shape for the head, but what if the object is heavy? Having few duplicated object will kill your scene.

The solution is to separate the head (extract), then duplicate and do some blendshapes, keep the first duplicated as the 'base' rather than the original mesh because we can't use original mesh as the target due to vertex order change. As soon as blend shape is ready, create a blend shape to the 'base' so it stores information. Then apply wrap deformer to the original mesh.

I know it's killing the scene by computing the calculation. But the trick here is GO TO INPUT AND CHANGE THE ORDER OF THE WRAP BELOW SKIN CLUSTER. Therefore the wrap deformer is no longer calculated after the skinned deformation. This will dramatically improve performance and resulting cleaner construction history. However another method is by using combine and merge verts, which leave ugly construction history. I prefer to use wrap instead.

Found that you can actually save some pixels on your navigation bar.

Right click on the home button > Customize, change icon to small, and start dragging your back, forward, refresh, stop, home button, url bar to the side of "help"

Using black white image as mask.

Intro
Sometimes you want to blend 2 different textures using the mask which is a black and white image (dirt maps or texture masks) *see B. The way I usually did is to select one of the channel which has better contrast, drag it to "create new channel" to create the alpha, and use that alpha (ctrl+click the alpha thumbnail) to create the selection (indicated by marching ants), and then apply that selection to A. Well this method has disadvantage if you want to use texture which has color information for example. I don't know if this method I'm gonna show is the right one, but it achieve the result I wanted.

Steps

Click the B. , ctrl+a to select all, ctrl+v to copy
Go to A. , create the "add layer mask", click the white area *it must be selected otherwise you won't see alpha channel
Go to channel Tab, click on the alpha layer and make it visible.
Make sure the layer is selected, and the eye icon is on, ctrl+v to paste
Done, now you need to do is delete/hide the original mask which we copied earlier

Update: My GF pointed me out an easier way.

Click on the B/w layer (B), in channel, click the RGB instead of creating an alpha from one of the channel, so basically it will select everything, then apply mask on the (A). As simple as that, how stupid am I.

The web is evolving

Nowadays we got blogger, twitter, facebook, and all other stuffs. To be honest it's quite time consuming to update all these. I still love this blog, but I believe the web has evolved again. From all those, I've chosen facebook over twitter and all others. I've found kutucg to share all my knowledge and cg related infos so ppl can benefit. I've got Deviantart to put all my works related stuff. I've got makanmana.net to put my interest in Culinary side. And lastly I've got facebook for mostly personal and time killing stuffs. So basically what's this blog for??

In the mean time, I'll be very busy finishing off my final year 3D animated short film.

kutuCG V2

I've to rebuild kutuCG due to my HDD crashed. All my previous working files are gone. I've migrated the engine from punBB. It was good, fast, and light. But lack of features, like PM, polling, and some moderation tools. It can be done by hacking/ adding plugin, but this also mean messing up with the database. Shortly said, the new engine is much more easier, learning curve was easy, and customization is sweet! although I feel it appeared to be a little slower than punBB, but hence the features it offers, gotta compromise. Therefore I tried to use less graphic buttons and relied more on CSS. Here's the layout when launched....

EVERYBODY COMPLAINED! it's too bright. Therefore I worked my ass out to match V1 look as closed as possible :p

HDD Screwed up

Dropped my Lacie 750gb ext HDD last nite when I tried to move my monitor. Tried to turn it on again, seemed like physical failure. Brought it to JB hifi to claim warranty but they asked me to do it myself.. fuck. Email and called Lacie technical support, they don't do data recovery... fuck. They sent me some company url which does data recovery, after talking to the guy, it cost around AUD2400, same price with my iMac... fuck. I gave up... Applications, music, project, documents, videos, TUTORIALS! lost. Lesson learned, backup to DVD no matter what.

KutuCG first month progress

It's been a month since KutuCG been launched. The forum has reached 223 members registration so far. Although 30% are non-active. However, it's an exciting news!

So far I've changed the header image and listened to members' feedback. It's tiring definitely, but I guess this is the most important part. Although not all of the issues can be resolved, I'm still looking for the workaround and fixing it asap.

During the first month, there's been some activities going on, notably 2D and 3D mini challenge with given theme "SHIO". It's just ended today and the result are impressive. Check it out 2D MINI 3D MINI

What's coming for February? KutuCG will begin another mini 3D and 2D challenge with "Valentine" theme. This has shorter amount of deadline and aimed toward busy members who's already in the industry and want something easy and short to finish.

Well, after almost 2 week work, I finally made it online. kutuCG is an Indonesian CG forum. Yes.. you may probably ask.. why create another forum while we already have the largest indocg.com?

It started when IndoCG was down due to the database overload, I wasn't really sure what's happening but this is roughly what I got from Soyuz from Mediavisi, ICG ex-hosting company. Since Rey, ICG founder and administrator didnt want the site to be down for so many days, he decided to move the entire content to another server. The first time it landed in Lunarpages which claimed to provide unlimited bandwidth, but unable to delivered so. With dissapointment, Rey had to move over the server to another hosting again. This time I wasn't really sure but I suspect it's Techscape. The problem came when transferring huge database and files over to another server. The size was roughly 3GB and upon transferring, some files were corrupted or internet was disconnected. This is what you guys in IndoCG are experiencing now. Rey had to setup a new forum with old database, hence all the customization which was done before are not synchronizing anymore. Some links, images, plugins, and custom pages are not working anymore. Stuff like image upload, Private message, are not working anymore...

This problem frustate him, I understand it's not easy to manage such big forum, we as moderators tried to help, but unfortunately it's not in the right time. Everybody was busy, including me. I was in about the end of my semester and got bunch of school work to do. Rey is married and has family now, and he also a flash game studio, which made him busier than before, therefore paying less attention to the forum.

Well, I love ICG. I grew from it. I knew so many people from it. After a long internal discussion, it is very difficult to decide what and where ICG is going toward. Option one, we moderators tend to donate some money and purchase commercial forum software, so it can handle large scale community better, but in return we should have access to the backend, and since Rey himself is not an active founder anymore, he's not listed in management team, although he still remain as founder. In simple word, We took over ICG. Second option, Rey himself buy the commercial forum, and let us take care of the content, he remain less active. Most moderators felt unfair on the second option. We do love to do voluntary work, keeping and managing the forum and such, but given that option, I suddenly lost my will and interest. Furthermore, he's invisible and absent from internal discussion, leaving the decision questioned *and he's still absent till now, although he promised something's gonna change after xmas.

Without backend access, we mods can't do anything. We can only overview forum. And with his absence, everything becomes difficult. Speaking of which the forum still can't open registrations due to spam bot and such. This forum is going nowhere. Where's the fun of speed modeling challenge? daily sketch? speed painting? I guess most of the moderators felt the way I do.

So I discussed this issue with Soyuzno from Mediavisi, and I'm glad he's happy to help. He's willing to support hosting for me to create a new forum. After few discussions with some mods and friends, we decided to create kutuCG.com

I understand some of you guys, even myself sometimes prefer to visit worldwide CG forum, such as CGtalk, Threedy, Gameartisans, DA and others. I was thinking and hesitant to create another forum. But, isn't it a shame we Indonesian artists do not have a place to hangout online, a place called home?

Learning from past and mistakes, I hope I can manage this forum better. It is not aiming to be the largest or ICG replacement or whatsoever, but I believe one day I could bring back those moment I had in ICG few years ago.

This time, it's a forum by artists for artists, and I hope in this forum, we can work hard, play harder.

Well... Looking back at my blog, time passed by so quickly. I didn't realized this blog has been existed for 4 years. It started from the day I worked in Twisted, mainly to share interesting links, and some of production techniques I learned throughout my working day. And then it slowly turned into personal blog since I've quit my job. That's bunch of entries and all mixed up. I must admit 2008 is a tough year for me, physically and mentally. Slow Update

It's been a slow update recently, been busy with assignment. Collaborative project has just finished, and we're all satisfied with the result. 3 more assignments to go. I just update makanmana.net layout to a new one.

Been playing with maya2009 lately, it's worth upgrading I would say. The IPR is getting better in this version. Also the animation and render passes in mental ray are awesome. The animation layer would somehow use trax editor workflow, just that it's more simplified and easier to use in term of workflow.

School is just approx 4 weeks to go. After that it's party time... or more like a... [insert your own opinion here]

Previously I was using flashget as download manager which is 5.5mb in size, and it has built in torrent, which personally I don't quite like it. On top of that I had to use flashgot which is a firefox plugin to capture link from browser (oh yeah this is freakin useful for rapidshare links) and transfer it to flashget. Now I uninstalled both flashgot and flashget, getting an Orbit Downloader, which is just 2.2mb in size, and better.. it has built in firefox integration.

It's been a trend in Japan recently to use qr-code as a communication medium.

Kaywa has came up with its unique concept of this method. As you can see I have my own qr-code in this blog.

The way it worked is to use your Handphone's camera, together with kaywa mobile application which is called kaywa reader, which will scan the code, decode it, and open the decoded link, be it url, message, text, etc.

Once scanned from the mobile phone...

Mac mouse sucks, except the 360* scroll bar. Well visually it's nice, but when comes to work it's just not ergonomic. So I purchased Razer Krait. But I just realized when I plugged it, the movement is just weird. I don't know how to explain but it's the 'feel', which is much better in Windows. Worse, there's no mac driver for this mouse. Desperately looking for solution, I found this software.

Swap alt<->command(windows logo) in boot camp mac keyboard

Having installed bootcamp in my mac, using apple keyboard is a little bit troublesome, especially when I'm used to regular pc keyboard layout. In bootcamp, alt(option) react as alt in windows, whereby command key react as windows logo. This is getting annoying when I start using 3d application like maya or modo where you click alt key a lot for viewport navigation. Another example is when I'm playing Dota, I keep holding alt almost all the time to show health bars.

I found a software called AutoHotkey which enable custom configuration on the keyboard. All you need is install the software. After that, open your notepad and fill in with this code:

LAlt::LWin

What it does is swapping both key. Save it as win-alt.ahk

Double click on it to activate.

You can choose to put the file in the startup folder to let it run everytime you boot windows.

Now, get back to dota and time to own.

I've found a new software called keytweak which basically does same thing, but more native and less buggy, because keyTweak tend to manipulate keyboard registry value.

As you can see above, the concept remained the same, this is quite easy to achieve.

Just click full teach mode, and begin the key mapping, basically you have to do it twice, by swapping both of the key. Failing to do so will only replace a key and not swapping them.

Got DSL today!

Finally, after few weeks.. subscribed to TPG ADSL2+ 150gb/mth plan. Geez I thought it's difficult to setup a network in mac. I purchased Netgear DG834Gv4 Modem router. Review said it's better compared to D-Link DSL-G604T, and checked out that it's just different by $4 *promotion in JB-Hifi. At first I was kinda doubt. D-link package cover mentioned it's compatible with mac, whereas Netgear didn't state clearly (though it said any OS with TCP/IP compatible).

Once home, plugged to the mac, connect the ethernect cable and trying to setup the router (Although DSL is not activated yet). In the beginning there's a confusion. Mac didn't read the cable. It's stated unplugged. WTF, I thought either my mac ethernet socket or the cable was broken, but I could connect to the modem setting via web interface.

Few days afterward, I received an email from TPG that my DSL account has been activated. My joy didn't last long however. I tried to connect the modem to the wall socket, and the DSL light is not blinking. Something went wrong, so the next day I went to buy a home phone set, which in the end turned out the old converter connected to the wall socket was spoiled. Therefore I replace the converter with the new one coming with the phone. Regarding the ethernet cable issue, I realized I have to use slight force to ensure the cable is plugged, but in the end I prefer to go wireless.

Setup complete.

Purchased iMac 20" 2.66 ghz and upgrade to 4gb ram. So far lovely... though cursing most 3d apps run in Windows only. Dejavu, like how I hated Maya upon migrating from Lightwave.

First day in Melbourne

Just arrived after 12 hours transit time from Singapore. I'm damn tired and worn out. It's not as freezing as people said *maklum aku anak kampung. Currently staying in my friend's apt for temporary before getting my own. Apts here are definitely better than KL. Getting a nap soon, goin to bank to settle account and school to get any other informations. I like the weather here!

Gmail has been my favourite email account due to it's stability and fast in loading, and less spams too. Recently there's a feature called 'Labs'. It's an experimental project to enhance workflow.

One thing I've enabled so far is mouse gesture.

Go to these settings to activate it.

Once saved, Gmail will reload, and click on the message.

Right click and move mouse to right -> next message.
Right click and move mouse to left -> previous message.
Right click and move mouse to up -> Back to Inbox

Finally bought my rapidShare premium account from Rspoints. Had a chat with Ryan, one of the guy over there asking bout term and policy regarding the usage. At first I doubt RapidShare(RS) will block my account, coz I'm using dynamic IP from Speedy. Firefox 3 missing button solved

Firefox 3 has just launched today. Though the main server is down due to heavy traffic, I manage to download via filehippo.

However upon finishing my default installation, the back button is missing. I thought it's default when you don't have any previous link. But indeed it's missing. I tried to search for google, but the result was mostly related to RC version bug. They shouldn't have this problem on final release of Firefox 3!

After a while, I finally figured out it must be the layout issue. To solve this problem, go to view > toolbars > Customize...

You can either drag the button to the layout, or just click 'restore default set'.

Voila! Solved.

Back from Penang

It's last week actually, got diagnosed and the result was that I'm fine? Means no lower back injury, no protruding joints, what the heck? I got my blood checked *the doctor was not convinced that I suffer injury, and it turned out that I had a quite undecent rheumatic factor, which is slighty above normal, therefore I suffer pain every morning I woke. No serious actions needed, just 1 tablet of medicine every nite after dinner.

Well, the good news is, I can get back to jogging, and gym perhaps :)

Ever since I suffer from this pain, my lifestyle has turned up side down. Used to wake up after 9/10 o'clock, now I woke up earlier than everybody else at home. 6.45am exactly, preparing to swim. And do some weightlifting after work. Sunday routine, 5.30am jogging with some friends. My fav magz which was used to be 3DWorld has changed to MensHealth and Muscle Indonesia. Taking care of what I ate, and get enough rest. The result, 11kg lost since Sept07, Body fat reduced from 34%-18%. Couldn't be happier of the efforts all this time. And I enjoy doing it...

I just received a gift from Hendriyo, my 3D fella who joined 2isted as an intern and worked under my supervision. Truly I never expect anything from you. It's been good to hear you're improving so much from then and I hope you keep learning and sharing your knowledge :)

It's a rattan from Kamoro race in Papua, which is used to build Honai house. Whatever it is, I'm really honored for this and truly, it's more valuable than the Ipod I requested haha... j/k

Melbourne study cancelled

It's quite an old news, but some friends of mine haven't been informed yet. My further study to Melbourne has been postponed. It's sorta last minute decision, where everything has been settled down, from school fee to air ticket. I had dengue fever on January, oh well.. rite before Sibayak trip, and the fact my back joint is not getting any close to full recovery. My parents are worried, thus asking advice from the doctor. The result was obvious. I need to rest.. at least I got time till next semester. I was supposed to go to Penang for medical checkup last week, but unfortunately one of my uncle passed away, and again, the tickets gone. Not to be regretted, important thing come first which is my uncle's funeral ceremony. Therefore, hopefully, if god allow, I'll be flying to Penang this monday.

Sibayak Trip

Hell lots of fun, went to Brastagi, 6 of us, Henny, Edy, Rudy, Jennifer, me and Bobby (the driver). Stay in Bobby's villa. Sunday, 4.30am, headed to the mid of the mountain by car. Reach top of Sibayak at 6.05am. Sky was clear, tired, freezing, but it's all worthy. Sun is rising, things u'll never see in the city... Life is precious.

It's a rare case, but having a bad lifestyle for over few years (forsaking sleep, meal, sitting too long in front of computer, stress, etc) lead me to back injury, it started to get pain on August 2006, but I didn't really bother that, till it's seriously pain and I went to check with the doctor and had my back MRI scanned. Turned out my 4/5 Lumbar joint is protruding, so now.. I gotta rest.. total bed rest.. sigh.. Not a good year to start with...

So my fellow CG artists and friends.. please do take care of your health :) It's more important than anything else, and now only I realize, really realized....

Not that I'm lazy, I'm relatively busy these days, though it's not CG related anymore... been helping my dad business, especially during fasting season (puasa), it's hell lots of customers, spare my time in gym, and sculpture (even though it's not started yet, preparing some homemade stuffs that couldn't be found here), and the fact that I'm still using a lousy home computer here...sigh.

I just got 301, so for now I'll stick with that since it's a lot lighter compare to maya in memory resource. Can't wait to start texturing on my cylinder character. Probably on Idul fitri, hey we got 1 week holiday rite? :)

Besides, I'm working on something with a partner, not a right time to announce yet.. :) soon..it will be..

Pre Paradise

So... It's 1 week left before I'm going back to Medan. I've been jobless this month but luckily my savings is still more than enough to cover my expenses, at least till next year...hopefully. A lot of things happened but unfortunately I've just got internet installed after 3 weeks from 1st of August.. sucks..

Recent news is about the new version of maya and max. Funny they rename it to 2008 instead of Version 9. I personally didn't like the sound of that, but hey, it's autodesk.. they never listen to a customer like you. Overall improvement is worth to look at, especially on rigging and nCloth side. Modeling workflow is also increased by replacing 123 key to smooth.. very good workflow. But this time I'm more eagerly to wait for Modo 301. A lot of cool features that yet haven't been explored, and it will somehow slowly change our old school way of doing 3d.

Aside from 3D, Stanley my ex-colleague just celebrated his wedding few weeks ago. Lots of fun on the wedding dinner, especially toward the end, because AhLoong and Cjinq are both pawned and got drunk.. LOL. Congratulations Stanley, if you're reading this.

Since I'm no longer working, this blog will be slowly changing into personal blog. I'm taking a break and going back to learn traditional art, but I'll try to post any technical stuffs that I find interesting to be shared. :D

So, if you ask me what's my daily activities now? GAMING.. yeah..I'm so addicted to DOTA.. and eat. as much as I can before going back. I've just had Tony Roma's tonight, that made me want to post it..

Yesterday went to art shop to buy some basic traditional sculpting tools. It's expensive, so gotta be serious in this hobby.

No, it's not 'kue bakul'.. It's industrial styling clay :P I was thinking to buy super sculpey aswell, but my budget didn't allow and I'm afraid it'll cause overweight on my luggage when I go back Medan next month.

Rectangular size texture map

Usually we will create square size texture map and for games engine, it'll mostly must be power of 2, e.g : 512x512,1024x1024,2048x2048. However there are particular case which require rectangular size, like 1024x512, or 512x128.

In maya itself, the uv range is always square, this is confusing because if we have a rectangular size texture slapped on square size layout, it will be stretched. Look at the image below.

The uv size range from 0 to 1. And it's square. Let's apply rectangular size texture.

The texture is now stretched. What if we want the uv to follow the texture rather than the other way round?
Use image ratio as shown in the image.

However, this result UV to stretch. Therefore, you need to work in the proper uv (image ratio on).
Once you're done with the uv, you can turn image ratio off. It'll look stretched (shrinked), but it doesn't matter, because that's the correct uv with correct texture. Unless you're planning to change the texture size :)

Custom character control interfaces

As suggested by BuGuru, I would like to explain some of the custom character controls available. There's no point on creating your own unless the existing doesn't suit your workflow.

1) David Keegan C3 [download]

This is by far the simplest and step by step guide.
1) By executing the script you're prompted with a dialog to setup or load character.
2) If you choose setup, the first step is to define the character(type the name), what it does is to snap a screenshot based on the camera(It is actually playblasting currentframe and save it as images)
3) Once you click done, the next step is to define the control, you can select and move it in x and y direction, the select field works this way:
- select the control on C3 viewport, select any object/control in maya viewport.
- press the 'select' button. C3 will link both object.
- Under the tool, you can either select one, so by selecting the control, it automatically change to the tool corresponding to the tool you select.
refer to the image for better understanding.

click Finish and you're done.
But as you can see, there's no additional node in the scene. C3 is quite smart in the way it stores a mel inside your project directory, you can see a folder named "C3" and inside there is a snapshot and a mel file. So you can always load the character anytime.

2) Adam Burke's abxPicker.

abxPicker is similar to C3, but with more control and advanced settings.
Everything is basically already explained in the help.

3) Dan Moreno's Character control

Not really my favorite, because the window took so much space and it look unorganize and not flexible. But perhaps if you like it, you may give it a try.

Extremely Busy & Habu

Again, I'm not dead. Just been extremely busy these few weeks. Looking back at my post here which was last year's entry, I finally get a Habu mouse. Some of you may say I'm insane, in fact, all the people in my office said so. It cost me RM250 (Rp.650.000). I believe I was physically and mentally healthy upon the transaction. Well, for a mouse that you use regularly everyday, is it too harsh to invest a little bit more on it? Besides I've been using my old white mouse(which was my favorite) till I got wrist injured :)

I'll be writing on how to create a UI for character animation selection. Not really my preference, but since I'm out of idea and BuGuru requested it, might give it a try.

Workrave is a program that assists in the recovery and prevention of Repetitive Strain Injury (RSI). The program frequently alerts you to take micro-pauses, rest breaks and restricts you to your daily limit.

Well for most of us, animators, designers who spend more than 8hrs a day in front of computer, I guess this is a good program for exercise hehe..

Adobe Photoshop CS3 tryout

Just tested PS3 last nite. Overall I like it, especially the 3d integration. Still got a lot more to explore, but for now I would like to share this simple tips.

Back in old time it's quite troublesome to have a 3d object viewed with the wireframe.

In CS3, just import the obj file, and double click on the 3d layer, and chech the setting on the image.

There seems to be a lot of potential for enhancing workflow in the pipeline. The new Edit a video on a frame-by-frame basis could be really helpful in removing green matte for examples. Lots of stuffs, lots of fun..

Sadly, It doesn't run on Windows 2000...

Maya modeling technique

Before using maya, I was a lightwave user for about 2 years. Having accustomed to modeling toolset in LW, I cursed maya a lot when I just started to use it.

However, I found some similar technique which can be found in Max or XSI too perhaps.

Based on my knowledge and experience, these 3 are the technique I used the most.

1. Using proxy.
I used this the most. Previously maya below version 7 hasn't got this tool yet. Instead I used CPS (Connect Poly Shape). It's a script, which behave in similar way.

To use:
- select an object you want.
- click Proxy > Subdiv Proxy options box.
For more info, you can refer to help. But usually I would leave everything to default, except Subdiv Proxy Shader to Keep.

Once applied, you'll see there's a new object on top of it. If you check the outliner, There are now 2 objects under 1 group.

So how's it similar to LW? Did you see TOGGLE PROXY DISPLAY and BOTH PROXY AND SUBDIV DISPLAY on previous image? There's a default shortcut key, which is ` and ~.

Try this:
Select vertex on lowpoly, press `, move it, so now you'll see the hires is moving as well.

Okay, now I'm done with the modeling, how do I clean it up?
Well, you can manually delete the hires, unparent the lowpoly and delete the group node, but the simpler way would be:
select the lowpoly object, apply the proxy > subdiv proxy again.

Why manually delete? Sometimes I found proxy to be a little bit buggy.

Advantages:
- Easy toggle and editable. LW and Modo users will love this.
- History is properly kept.

Disadvantages:
- Sometimes buggy with mirrored objects.
- Sometimes you have to manually delete the smooth object (bug I guess)
- Smoothed object might have problem with render (investigate the render stats under attribute editor)

2. Active Smooth Poly (http://www.3dbe.com/ActiveSmoothPoly/Default.aspx)
This is another script I used by Tal Threstha. The purpose I used this mainly is for viewing hires object only.
You'll find out more in his website, I'll just summarize.

Advantages:
- Fast, I assign to alt+q, object smoothed, and you can still orbit the viewport
- Good for minor tweaking which do not require proxy.
- History is clean, since the script will automatically clean polysmooth node after it's deactivated.
- Comes with smoothing radius, so you can adjust the distance of smooth, good for slow computer.

Disadvantages:
- Once smoothed, you can't edit the lowres object like proxy mode.
- selecting object and activate the script is fast, but selecting vertex and activate the script seems to slow down performance.

3. HKSubDConvertor (http://www.henrykorol.com/Scripts/SubdToggle/index.html)
The last one here is not really my preferences, but it's worth mentioning. I occasionally use it.
Again, visit the website for more information.

Advantages:
- Smooth object look really smooth, because it converts object to SubD
- Good for detailing or finishing phase.

Disadvantages:
- Always delete history, not good if you'd like to keep bevel or such node.
- Personally I just feel it's not clean, even though it claims to be.
- Once in a while it would crash maya.
- Conversion would be slow sometimes, depending on your machine and poly counts.

File Revision System using FileHamster

When working with scenes, we are aware that saving files incremently is extremely important. However, most of the times we end up losing the track/record of what we have done toward that particular scene and we often end up being cluttered by bunch of files inside a folder.

There are several ways to remedy this, one of them is by using attribute editor (there's a small comment box in the bottom)

I recently found a free software called FileHamster. What it does is basically save the backup of your current scene, and allow you to give comments, or notes, and also lock the file, so that it's not easily edited.

What you see here, is that I ask FileHamster(FH) to watch a folder called c:\Documents...\scenes, and in that folder I have only 1 file, which is test_V01.mb

test_V01.mb only have a sphere in a scene. I save the file.
The popup will appear, asking what comment you wanna write, so I write "a scene..."

Next, I add a cube to the scene, and save again. This time I still save the scene as test_V01.mb, instead of test_V02.mb, which was my typical workflow. The popup appear again, asking for comment, so I add "tambah cube".

I did the same thing again by adding cone.. and the process goes on.

The benefit here is that I only have a file on my working directory, instead of several versions, which is of course, neato!

There is a good example on using FH with Photoshop in their website, I suggest.. give it a try :)

I found this photo when organizing my Harddisk folders. Funny when I looked back into my past, things have changed ever since, I miss those time painting on canvas, or spent one week mid-term break at library practising anatomy and sketches everyday rather than going on holiday or break like others did. It's sad to think about it, as I didn't have as much fun as others did, but I won't be what I am now if I took the other path :)

The other guy on the photo is Foad, my life drawing lecturer on sem 2. Totally a pure artist, he played music, weird music... he does caricature, and lotsa other stuffs.. Genious guy I would say.. one of my best teacher and a guy who influence my life, well.. at least the hair is a good starting point :P

I met Lance a while ago on Indosat job, which require me and KFC to fly down to jakarta to handle and supervise some CG shots. I was told about this film while chating with him during break session, but never been given a clue about the movie. It was supposed to be shown last year, and some of us were invited to the premiere.. but I think as time fly, it's forgotten :P or maybe it could be another reason, as the title said, it's quite controversial. I read the novel, it's thrilling and creative in unique way. Let's see how well Lance portray it into the screen :)

Setting Image Plane in Maya

There are 2 most popular techniques used to setup imageplane for modeling reference. Let's discuss both of them.

Before we begin, let's get some image to model. In Photoshop, align them.
So here it is:

Use marquee tool to select each image, crop, and then save them separately. So, now we have:
car_side.jpg
car_top.jpg
car_front.jpg

Notice that the car_front is facing right, we need to rotate it 90* to the left, so it's facing down (which is +Z in Maya)

Back in maya, here is the first technique:

01. Using camera image plane.
advantage: Easy, less hassle.
disadvantage: Slow down maya performance.

02. Using poly plane.
advantage: Faster maya performance, easy adjustment.
disadvantage: Slow setup.
How? Watch this video :)

From both technique, I prefer to use the second one, which use polyPlane. I know it takes a while to setup, but hey.. There's a script to simplify your workflow.

Redesign the layout, seharusnya lebih rapi dan readable, and the comment is hopefully working now.

Hate to do this, but it's fun once in a while to bimbo blog.
Lagi finishing animator friendly rigging part 01 by Jason Schleifer (characterTD - gollum@WetaDigital) and I'm concentrating on utilizing modeling and rendering workflow in MODO. It's a great app, small, but potential.

Let's hope I can come out with something in these few weeks using that software :)

I'll start blogging in english now. Since visitors' number are increasing, I'm confuse to either continue blogging in Indonesian or english. Some complained reading what I wrote. Clarity is necessary, and honestly I'm not so fluent writing indonesian, so to be universal, I guess it's fair.

Maya Render Layer problem

Ini problem laen yg sedang dihadapi di kantor.

Scene terdiri dari :
-sphere
-plane

dengan material sebagai berikut :
- misss_fast_simple_maya, kemudian attach lightmap shader dan mentalraytexture.
- pada render layer, assign occlusion override.

lalu, set multiply mode pada layer occlusion.

Agar lebih jelas, liat illustrasi ini:

Maka apabila kita render masing2 layer, kita mendapatkan :

Gambar diatas ternyata tidak sesuai dengan yg kita harapkan.

Khiang, technical 3D supervisor di kantor, dan saya yg masi cupu melakukan beberapa test/experimen, dan akhirnya menemukan solusinya.
Hal ini disebabkan oleh adanya alpha/mask pada hasil renderan. Walaupun pada render global kita sudah uncheck alpha channel (Mask).
Cara laen utk benar2 mematikan alpha ialah pada framebuffer maya :
opsi ini masi menyimpan alpha = RGBA (Red Green Blue Alpha)

Oleh karena itu, hilangkan alphanya hehe.. :

Ada beberapa technical issue disini:
- Pada saat saya test render, walaupun settingannya sudah benar, kayanya harus direfresh lagi rendernya, dengan cara mengubah panah merah yg terletak di samping huruf 'R' pada render layer editor menjadi hijau, kemudian render lagi. Proses ini tidak akan berlangsung lama, karena panah hijau berarti kita menggunakan hasil renderan sebelumnya (no re-render), sort of refresh.
- Pada test ini kami menggunakan format iff, kami belum mencoba menggunakan jpeg, tiff, tga dan sebagainya.

Just a little reminder for myself. Ketika memakai mia_material pada mental ray. Hati2 ama size/proportion/scaling pada scene, karena berpengaruh banget ama hasil rendering.

Kesalahan ini saya temukan pada saat scene yg saya buka dari kerjaan teman. Setelah selesai menganimate, saya buka scenenya utk tweak shader/lighting agar matching dengan background.

Namun, ntah kenapa.. 2 hari saya tweak ga dapet2 settingannya, dimana tidak terlihat transparansi di belakang jar tersebut.

Akhirnya setelah saya hampir putus asa, saya buka master file yg hanya berisi object jar tersebut, kemudian saya assign shader yg sama, lalu render.. and I got this.

Bloody HELL.........

Caricature ialah sebuah art dimana portrait seseorang di modifikasi, baek simplifikasi, distorsi, dll. Agak susah juga kalo mau belajar, makan waktu, dan banyak usaha. Namun hari ini saya menemukan sebuah software, dimana foto seseorang bisa dimodifikasi dengan mudah. Walau sebenarnya hal ini bisa dilakukan di Photoshop, tetapi software ini banyak memberi kemudahan.

2 minggu lalu aku sempat ikut speed modeling yg diadakan di ICG. Ini hasilnya, seekor stingray, tribute to Mr.Crikey.

Modifying shift+RMB marking menus

Marking menu adalah salah satu diantara fitur di maya yg sangat berguna dalam meningkatkan workflow kerja. Marking menu dapat dibuat sendiri di Marking menu editor, yg terletak di window > settings/preferences > marking menu editor.

Pada maya versi 7 dan keatas, ada sebuah fitur yang dinamakan context marking menus, dimana marking menus tersebut dapat berubah sesuai dengan kondisi yang ditemukan. Misalnya pada scene yang kosong, shift+RMB pada viewport akan muncul marking menus yg berisi command utk membuat cube, sphere, dll. Bila ada object yg di seleksi, maka shift+RMB akan muncul marking menus yg berhubungan dengan object tersebut, misalnya split polygon atau sculpt polygon tool. Apabila dalam object tersebut, kita pilih edge, atau vertex, atau face, dan kita shift+RMB lagi, maka marking menu akan muncul lagi dengan command yg berbeda. Fitur ini sangat berguna, karena dengan demikian kita telah menghemat puluhan keyboard shortcut menjadi sebuah shortcut, yaitu shift+RMB.

Namun fitur ini terbatas, karena kita tidak dapat melakukan perubahan pada shift+RMB melalui marking menus editor yg terdapat di maya. Satu2 nya cara ialah mencari dan memodifkasi script asli yg terdapat di dalam folder installasi maya. Oleh karena itu, mari kita bedah script yang terletak pada C:\Program Files\Alias\Maya8.0\scripts\others , cari script yg dimulai dengan context*.mel ( bisa dilakukan dengan menggunakan search).

Coba kita amati, semua commandnya selalu dimulai dengan contextPolyTools(Default, Edge, Face, Object, Vertex)MM. Dari sini kita sudah tau bahwa nama dari masing2 tugasnya ialah membuat command marking menus. contextPolyToolsMM.mel ialah induk dari semua context marking menus, dimana fungsinya ialah utk mengidentifikasikan jenis object/sub-object yang terseleksi, kemudian memunculkan marking menusnya.

Agar lebih jelas, buka mel tersebut, dan lihatlah commandnya, lalu test di maya. Hal ini lebih mudah dimengerti daripada dijelasin disini :P

Lalu, bagaimana cara memodifikasinya? Cara yang paling gampang ialah dengan membuat marking menus sendiri pada marking menus editor di maya, kemudian di save. Maka di dalam my documents/maya8.0/prefs/markingMenus akan muncul satu marking menus tambahan, sesuai dengan nama yang disave sebelumnya di marking menus editor. Buka mel tersebut dengan text editor, copy semua perintahnya, kemudian buka context marking menus yang ingin diubah, sehingga pada akhirnya formatnya menjadi contoh:

Selanjutnya, terserah anda... Bisa overwrite filenya, tapi saya lebih merekomendasikan utk di save di my documents/maya8.0/scripts karena lebih aman dan mudah di organized. Script ini tidak akan bentrok dengan file aslinya, karena Maya akan men-source ulang semua scripts yg ada di users scripts directory, dan apabila namanya sama, maka script tersebut akan mengganti isi script yg telah di-source sebelumnya di program files/alias/8.0/scripts

Dengan melakukan sedikit pencarian dan experimen, kita juga bisa menambah context marking menus pada nurbs, subD, joint, animation, dll. Kita juga bisa menggunakan ctrl+shift+RMB, Namun saya belum menemukan alasan menggunakannya, karena shift+RMB dan marking menus yg diassign ke tombol sudah lebih dari cukup utk menyimpan command tersebut. Tapi bukan berarti saya membatasi, apabila anda menemukannya, silahkan berbagi :)
